Stars Welcome Yandle to Dallas In what may be the quietest trade deadline in DHL history, the Dallas Stars answered an immediate need for Power Play Points on the backend, adding Keith Yandle from the Flyers. The 32 year old looks to have some legs left in his game, upping his Points Per Game over the past 3 seasons with the Panthers, and would be leading the Stars in Power Play Points with 28 had he played the whole season in Dallas. "Yandle is one of those guys who quietly does his job!" In his first game since being acquired by Dallas, Yandle put up 2 assists. "I'm Happy to be here, it'll be nice to get a taste of the playoffs, and this Dallas team looks like a team that can turn it up at anytime. I'm a big fan of where this team is headed, the youth is crazy good here, I'm just happy to be a Star." - Keith Yandle The Stars held some preliminary talks with a few other teams, but ultimately found the prices a little hefty. "Yeah we talked to a few teams, but weren't willing to give up core pieces for aging vets with how we have matched up against some of the top teams this season. If we are going to win this year, it is going to have to be with this group, we aren't looking to sell our future." The Stars may regret moving Bertuzzi, had he not been injured he would have broken the 50 point mark, and looks locked in as a top 6 forward in Detroit.

Stars Brace for Battle Against # 4 Seed Flames! The Stars will be heading into round one against former DHL Champion Calgary. Dallas will be struggling in net with only Fleury and Rinne on the active roster, but hope to translate their limited starts into some quality victories. The Stars do have Thatcher Demko, Carter Hart and Colin Delia who could be used as emergency call ups should their teams decide to play them. The Stars had struggled late int he season but pulled off a few quality victories to close out the season and look to be running relatively hot heading into round 1. We aren't taken the Flames as an easy challenge, this is a team just 2 years removed form a Championship. The proved their worth holding onto a DHL playoff spot in the final week and I'm sure will be looking to prove they have lots left in the tank. The Stars will begin their search for a 2nd DHL Banner Monday night in Calgary. "Hockey is a team game and I think we are really gonna prove that this week, we might not have any superstars on our roster, but we all have heart" - Erik Cernak

DALLAS STARS REPEAT! Sure it isn't the Championship the Stars hoped for when they entered the 2018-19 Season, and definitely not the ending we envisioned after leading the league in Points after the first 3rd of the season; but the Stars did repeat their 3rd place finish from a season ago, showing the youth is growing, and carrying a bigger workload while the veterans are slowly retiring and/or being dealt away. The Stars almost got knocked out first round by the surprise Flames who had some hot and cold stretches throughout the year but showed why they were capable of winning championships in this league. Some last minute heroics saved the Stars and allowed them to take a tie break to fight again another day! The Stars unfortunately took a hit in goal and lost starting net minder Marc Andre Fleury, forcing them to try and win some additional offensive cats against the high octane Habs. "not the matchup we wanted, and not the result we wanted." The Stars lost out on a championship final and instead got matched up in the 3rd 4th place matchup after the heart break lost to arch rival GM Chris. Although all attention went to the Habs Wild powerhouse final matchup, fans who did follow the Rangers/Stars matchup got a real treat. The Stars pulled off unlikely wins in GWG and SHP which are definitely not their teams forte, luckily for the Stars, the Rangers rolled out Frederick five hole Anderson early in the week, allowing the Stars to get a nice buffer in GAA and Save %. The Stars looked to be in trouble with Saros starting Monday over Rinne, Fleury still injured, and Philly announcing Talbot would get 2 of the 3 starts that week. Thatcher Demko to the Rescue! Demko got called up to make an emergency spot start for the stars and stood on his head, Saros got sick so Rinne got a late start, and Carter Hart ended up making 2 starts instead of 1 after a great showing mid week, giving the stars just enough to claim the points required for a win! The Rangers made it close with a late short handed point making the Stars brass sweat it out, but luckily the Stars held on for a 7-6 final, capturing the 3rd place win and setting them self up nicely for yet another advancement up the rankings in years to come. "Building a top notch team isn't easy, we have stayed dedicated to this rebuild and really hope that everything falls into place, 2019-20 was our target for that next step, and really we are ahead of where we thought we would be these last two seasons, so with any luck we can take that other step and get back to the finals for the first time in 4 seasons!" The Stars have parted ways with Ilya Kovalchuk; "We expected bigger things from Kovalchuk and paid a high price to acquire him...its not all his fault with how his coach used him, and really he did help us to a third place finish by opening up the bench spot to call up Demko when we waived him...thanks for the memories Koval-Suck!" The Stars would like to congratulate the Wild on a great season, always nice to see the Championship stay within the division, lets hope that's the last of em for those nasty wild for the time being anyways! Also congrats to Chris the bridesmaid, never fun watching the other one take the podium, especially when the finish was so close...there is always a chance Peter tests positive for a controlled substance in the future and you get awarded the Championship, so keep the faith brother!

El Nino returns to Dallas where he won his first DHL Championship! The Dallas Stars have reacquired Nino Neiderreiter. El Nino was a big eyed rookie in the DHL when the Dallas Stars captured the DHL championship. "Its a dream come true for me to rejoin the Dallas Stars here in the DHL, I played 4th line minutes and remember scoring a huge goal against the DHL Leafs and GM Ty that helped push us past the powerhouse leafs and into the final." El Nino has thrived away from the Dallas Stars and will look to line up alongside Sebastion Aho, and Andrei Svechnikov on the Stars 2nd line heading into training camp. "Having 3 high scorers who all play for the Hurricane in the NHL should help the DHL Stars put up some big points in groups!" The Dallas Stars seemed to pay a high price to reacquire a player that seemed more like a luxury then a need? The Stars are deep on the wing, and the 2020 draft looks like it could be a good one, so why did the Stars make this deal which cost them 2 2020 first round picks? "El Nino is an upgrade on our wing, he is a big player just coming into his own, and when you look at his time in Carolina he really lit it up. Power forwards take some time to develop and this kid is gonna break through this year. There aren't many 65+ point Power Forwards in todays NHL, a guy who shoots and hits and goes above average in PIM etc. We also landed a prospect in this deal who fits the same mold. Could we have got better players with 2 2020 first round picks? Maybe but I don't think so. Nino is young and will be a very good player for a long time so we are pretty happy with this deal." - GM Josh The Stars will be looking to continue their impressive feat of never missing the playoffs, and hope to add some more hardware for their trophy cabinet. The Stars came out strong last season leading the league in Points at the halfway mark but eventually fell back a little in the standings and finished the season with a 2nd consecutive 3rd place finish. Perhaps El Nino is the piece that puts the Stars back up to the top of the standings!

The Biggest Move the Stars made... was no moves at all!
The Stars expected to be major players at the deadline, but found themselves in a lot of talks that simply didn’t materialize. The Stars did add prospect Simon Holmstrom, via free agency, a RW drafted 27th overall by the Islanders last season. Holmstrom has had a rough start to his professional career, but recently has seen his scoring go up in the AHL and has shown glimpses of his top line potential that made him a first round draft choice in last years draft.
Marc Andre Fleury seemed destined to be dealt but talks fell apart in the final hours. “We had 6 teams reach out to us with solid offers on Fleury, and we actually had one deal all but sealed until management decided to back off and explore another offer one last time. The two top bidders for Fleury decided to take a different route leaving us left holding onto the all star goalie.” This may work out to the Stars benefit as Fleury has really turned his game up in the last couple weeks. Still signed at 7 mil a season til 2022, there are still lots of miles left on Fleury. The addition of block machine Martinez will also help Fleury down the stretch.
Rumours were swirling that Nolan Patrick, Evgeni Dadanov, Thomas Chabot, Bo Horvat, Elvis Merzlikens, Adam Fox, William Carrier, and the Stars two 2021 1st rounders all were involved in talks... At one point it appeared Patrick was emptying out his locker only to be seen later on putting back his belongings...
“There is no truth to that rumour” stated Patrick, “I’ve been out all season with migraine and the Stars have assured me I am part of their future after selecting me 2nd overall in the entry draft. My goal is to come back before the season ends and pick up where I left off... I was merely cleaning out my locker after I remembered leaving a sandwich in there last fall.”
With Shesterkin, Merzlikens, and Hart all taking over the starters rolls, moving Fleury would have made sense, but with prospect eligibility left on two of their 4 starters keeping Fleury may have some advantages. The Stars are coming off a huge win over division leader Minnesota, while currently leading #3 seed Vegas 11-3 in their weekly matchup.
Perhaps the biggest moves the Stars made, was no moves at all.

DALLAS STARS DRAFT RECAP Going into the 2020 DHL Draft, the Dallas Stars held 6 picks in the top 25. With picks 15,17,19,21,24, and 25 the Stars looked primed to add some potential game changers. Just prior to the DHL Draft, the Stars pulled off a trade with the newest GM in the DHL acquiring Max Pacioretty while given up the 19th and 24th pick as well as two players. After moving the younger Viktor Arvidsson to acquire some of the 2020 picks, it left fans wondering why the GM would move a comparable player for picks only to seemingly undo this trade by sending picks for the older Pacioretty? GM Mason had this to say; "Pacioretty is a great player, its true his stats are similar to the younger Arvidsson who we moved out, but after making several deals we felt that Pacioretty would give us a little more flexibility going into the year where some of our younger players just dont quit seem ready to step in." The Stars looked like a potential contender going into the DHL Playoffs prior to the cancellation of the playoffs. Leading the Mighty Habs at the halfway mark of their first round matchup, one has to wonder if the Stars were looking at making a run at the title? " I think we very well could have knocked off the Habs for a 3rd straight season, but its not something we really get too worked up about. The health and safety of our players are the top priority!" With that being said, it should be pointed out that the Stars barely squeeked into the playoffs, extending their perfect record of never missing the post season in the DHL and DHL2.0. The youth is a year older, but there has been some changes, most notably in net where the Stars traded off veteran Marc Andre Fleury, and young stalwarts Elvis Merzlikens, Thatcher Demko, and Michael DiPietro. The Stras will look to run the unproven Sherterkin, Petersen, and Hart in 2020-21. Picking in the 15th spot with their first pick, the Stars seemed to be taking a wait and see approach before committing to a player. The Stars didn't seem to have a jersey on hand to present to their first pick in the Draft, Hendrix Lapierre. "A year ago Hendrix was considered a potential #2 prospect, 3 concussions later and people started to drop him off their boards, but recently it was discovered they may not have been concussions at all! Is this a risky pick? Sure, but we love his landing spot in Washington and see him as a potential 1C on a Capitals squad that will be in a retooling mode in the near future. Lapierre has no real flaws in his game, but missed a fair chunk of time over the last 12 months. If his first game back in the 2020-21 QMJHL season is any indication, Lapierre does look to be back though, scoring 4 points! Lapierre is most often compared to Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Stars considered taking Connor Zary in this position knowing GM Dave would take him next, but didn't want to risk not getting Lapierre so took our favorite choice here. With the 17th pick, the Stars would have taken Zary, but as previously mentioned we were pretty sure he wouldn't get past GM Dave in the 16 spot. This left us with a handful of possibilities. Ultimately we wanted to select a higher end winger with a lot of upside, but with a safe factor to offset the riskier pick of Lapierre. The Stars decided on Dawson Mercer, mostly because we loved his landing spot with NJ. NJ boasts Hughes and Hischier at center, leaving a lot of potential for a top line winger. Palmieri was NJ's top winger in 2020 so Mercer should have some room to slide into a top 6 spot in the coming years. Mercer has the ability to play all three forward spots which also gives some flexibility. Mercer is also projected as one of the most sure fire prospects to make the NHL as he is a jack of all trades yet has an explosive engine and accurate shot. Mercer scores the majority of his goals in tight which is something all NHL teams look for as it shows he is willing to go to the hard spots to score!. Mercer is most commonly compared to Brayden Schenn and should be a player who can fill multiple categories for the DHL Stars in the not to distant future. The Stars considered Foerster and Gunler in this spot but felt the chances that one of the two would be around for the 21st pick were better then Mercer being there. With the 21st pick in the DHL draft, the Stars went off the board but took a player they seriously had originally planned to pick at 15 if he was there. Noel Gunler has everything a top line scoring forward needs, except the drive. Gunler gets limited icetime in the SHL as a younger player in the league, and his history of a bad attitude has led to him being kept off many of his National teams. Gunler was often projected to go in the top 15, but when he dropped to the 2nd round we felt we could wait a bit before selecting him. At 21 we felt this was a good spot to snag him as missing out on him would have been heart breaking. Gunler in our opinion is a top 10 Fantasy prospect in this draft, there is a higher boom bust factor here, but ultimately this is a game changer who could easily be a top line guy taking feeds from Aho and Svechnikov for years to come! Carolina is an up and coming powerhouse so Gunler found a good spot to land. The Stars really had no other prospects we expected to take here, this was our guy and had he gone between picks 18 and 20 we would have been devastated! Gunler is most often compared to Milan Hejduk. The Stars closed out their draft at pick 25, selecting Mavrik Bourque. Mercer was considered a safe bet, however Bourque as well is considered one of the safer bets in the 2020 draft. Bourque is a pass first scoring center with potential to play some on the wing, he has top line potential and jumps ahead of Dellandra on the Stars depth chart. The wait will be a little longer for Bourque as he is atleast 3 years away, however the payoff fits nice at this spot. The Stars other options in this spot was Perrault, we also considered a goalie but with very few goalies projecting as average or better we decided to go with the potential top liner in Bourque. Bourque is most often compared to Sam Reinhart. With their 4 picks in the books, do the Stars plan on acquiring more picks or taking advantage of the waiver rounds? "Never say never but I dont believe we will go that route. The Stars have 27 prospects now and would need to drop 3 to get to where we could add another prospect. there are a few players we still really like, but not necessarily better then any we already own so we will take a wait and see approach." The Stars wish all GMs the best in their draft, and hope you enjoyed our Draft Report for 2020!

Free Agent Gems;
It's been awhile since the Stars have added an article, so felt now would be a great time to get back into the habit! The Stars are having a season to remember, currently holding onto the top seed and fighting off a strong charge by several teams. The Stars wouldn't be here though if it wasn't for some free talent they picked up on the waiver wire over the years, drafting and trading are key to gathering talent, but that doesn't mean that star players aren't available on the waiver wire!
Dec. 16, 2016
On Dec. 16th the Dallas Stars dropped Jordan martinook to make room to add Free Agent Prospect Adam Fox. At this time Fox was still a member of the Calgary Flames, he was putting up some decent numbers but rumblings had Fox looking to play out his eligibility and not sign with the Flames, instead becoming a UFA. 2 years later the Flames traded Fox to the Hurricanes in a deal which saw Hannifan and Lindholm join the flames. Fox again refused to play for the Hurricane, playing out his eligibility and forcing a trade to the team of his choosing, the New York Rangers for a couple 2nd round draft picks. Fox may get booed everytime he goes to Calgary, but he certainly isn't booed on the Dallas Stars DHL team! Fox is the reigning Norris trophy winner and the staple of the Stars DHL defence. Once drafted 66th overall in the NHL, Fox became a member of the Stars via UFA and at the cost of dropping Jordan martinook to make room!
Nov. 19, 2014
It seems like forever ago, the Dallas Stars added a Russian goalie named Igor Shestyorkin (Shesterkin). Drafted 118th Overall by the New York Rangers, Shesterkin went undrafted in the DHL draft. The Stars took a flyer on him as a UFA. 10 goalies from the 2014 Draft class have played in the NHL, and it should be considered one of the strongest goalie drafts in NHL history, with such goalies as Demko, Sorokin, Merzlikens, Vanecek, Nedeljkovic, Kakhonen, Husso, Johansson, Halverson, and of course Igor Shesterkin all playing in the NHL since their draft year. Shesterkin is now considered a top 3 fantasy goalie and is the backbone of the Dallas Stars group of tenders.
Oct. 11, 2015
The Dallas Stars cut offensive defencemen Eric Gelinas after not living up to his expectations and added a young goalie named Cal Petersen. Often compared to the Sabres franchise goalie, Ryan Miller, Cal Petersen was drafted in the 5th round of the 2013 NHL draft. Like Adam Fox, Petersen chose to not sign with the team that drafted him after his Junior season in Notre Dame and instead become a UFA and signing with the LA Kings, Petersen hasn't cemented himself as the number one goalie in LA just yet, but certainly looks like their goalie of the future and with the Kings steady climb to contender should be ready at exactly the right time. The Stars expect Cal Petersen to be a steady force in the crease for years to come with his value only increasing from this point forward.
Oct. 11, 2016
Jonathan Audy-Marchessault, later known as Jonathan Marchessault, was thrown around like a hot potatoe for several years in the DHL, with 4 GMs owning him via prospect signing or via trade and dropping him before the Stars picked up the former AHL All Star and gave him a spot on their farm. Marchessault went on to be traded from the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Florida Panthers, and again later was picked up by the Vegas Golden Knights in their Inaugural draft. The Stars held Marchessault and couldn't be happier as they landed a peripheral stud. More luck then skill on this one, the Stars were happy to hold the hot potatoe in the end and have been loving the payout!
Oct. 8, 2021
Karel Vejmelka, unlike the other players listed, Vejmelka has yet to establish himself as a contender on the Stars daily roster, however, it isn't everyday you can add a goalie off the UFA wire and have him the starter of an NHL franchise and playing games a few weeks later. Vejmelka really came out of nowhere. A 2015 Nashville draft pick, Vejmelka has played exclusively in the Czechia League (Formerly known as the Czech League). Vejmelka was signed as a UFA by Arizona who believed they found a diamond in the rough. Vejmelka has won the praise of many hockey analyst, holding down the fort for the dreadful Coyotes. Recent articles suggest the Coyotes have been approached by several teams including the Oilers, Leafs, Blackhawks, and Wild interested in acquiring his services. Chris Johnston of TSN wrote this morning that the Coyotes may feel the need to put Vejmelka on the trade block if they are unable to extend him beyond this season, if this happens the Oilers seem to be the favorite to land him.
Unfortunately adding free agents who have gone on to become Stars isn't an exact science, the DHL Stars have also been on the wrong end, cutting ties with players too soon and watching them go on to be valuable members of other clubs. Jordan Binnington, Ben Bishop, Mark Stone, and yes even Victor Hedmen had been cut from the Stars roster at one point! There are also the UFAs that the Stars were just a little too slow to add like the case of Sam Bennett who sat on the waiver wire just waiting for a GM to give him a chance! Many waiver wire adds have since departed, most recently Mason marchment who is putting up over a point per game in Florida and was part of a package that brought Jonathan Huberdeau to the Stars at the trade deadline. With any luck we will be able to write a similar article a few years from now with a few more names added to the list!
