Hi everyone, looking forward to the draft! Wanted to bring up an idea before we got started about potentially expanding the prospect roster. We've had 25 slots for a while now and I think it's only natural as the league progresses we look at expanding this limit. Since I've been here our league has expanded, the NHL has expanded, my waistline has expanded but our prospect roster has remained the same!
All jokes aside it seems like it's taking the vast majority of prospects longer to make the NHL now, meaning most players drafted outside the top 10-15 in our prospect draft usually need at least a few years or more to actually make the roster and longer to be an effective NHL player worthy of a spot. I've noticed almost everyone's prospect roster is maxed out as we approach another draft.
Expanding the prospect roster could have some benefits to the league in terms of trading as well, it seems like trading was generally down this past season and prospect log-jams within all teams could be one of the reasons. We only had one deadline trade and nothing until just recently as the draft approaches. I've talked to a few teams who are reluctant to take on more draft pick capital because they don't have the room and also reluctant to take on prospects in trades for the same reason.
My feeling is if we expanded the prospect roster even by a couple spots (27) it could create a little more flexibility within our rosters and perhaps more activity, let alone allow us to hold on to an extra player or two as our guys develop.
Not sure on the exact way we'd do this, 2 spots right away, 1 spot per year until we reach 30 then cap it, or something along those lines.
Just a general idea I think is worth discussing and hearing other opinions and ideas, thanks guys!

Great Idea, Lou! I think your idea has merit. I also think the 27 prospect number is a good one and would be in line with the NHL who allow teams to hand out 50 contracts. Our NHL teams have 23 spots, so 27 spots for our prospects rosters would be nice. I am open to 30 as well over time, maybe 1 per year. I think we should do 27 right away.

This is a great suggestion and Lou I appreciate the thought you put into proposing it.

I don't mind that idea, although I would probably just fill the 2 extra spots right away, and be right back to not wanting to take on too many draft picks or prospect packages via trade... I think 27 would be fine, but adding more every year could get out of hand pretty quick...

SABRES Transactions——“ After trading for prospect Dylan Holloway, assign him to Syracuse. 30/25 (includes 2023 draft picks)”
Oh….now I see. Lol

With the draft winding down it looks like this is a smashing success. So are we going up to 27?
